As the year closes, tens of thousands of high-school seniors are scrambling to put together viable college-application packets, hoping to ensure their academic, professional and social future. The most pressurizing element of that packet is the essay: whereas GPA, resume of activities and SAT scores are statistics to put down on paper, the essay demands something more daunting of students, of these budding young adults. The essay calls for a statement of who they are. What teen knows how to answer that question? Of course, they’ve been thinking about it for the past several years.
