Myself being a smoker, I attempt to look at this topic objectively. Similar to Religion and Politics, though nowhere near as crucial or imperative, this is an issue that divides our society and local communities. The fact that this is even an issue today, I wholly contribute to the “dumbing down” of society. Yes, I believe in the government controlling certain aspects of our lives, however I also like to have faith in the ability of people to make wise decisions at their own discretion. It is, however, becoming all to clear the absence of moral obligation instilled in us today. Yes, we’re in this together. Restaurants, bars, and clubs being the main ones affected by this legislation, I sympathize for. Because of the carelessness of our fellow neighbors, these establishments have taken huge losses in their profits and lost a nice chunk of their customer base. Ordinarily, I would whole-heartedly disagree with the government placing restraints on smoking in public places. However, when I am in a restaurant, and I see a family with an infant, and that infant is involuntarily (of course) surrounded in a sea of smoke - I AM DISGUSTED. I am absolutely positive that the Virginia Slim festivities could be postponed for an hour or so. Thus, because of the inability of certain parents to make healthy decisions for their children on their own, I am relieved that our government stepped-in and made the decision for them. Now, where does this leave the “responsible” smokers? Here in the south, Waffle House is an institution deeply engrained in our roots. The local watering hole, if you will. Many a tired and weary (often drunken) soul has wondered through those doors seeking the comfort of warm coffee and a cigarette. Or what about our local bars and clubs? Now, even the “recreational smoker” no longer has the right to take a puff while dancing the Electric Slide and sipping on a Jack and Coke. In conclusion, my fellow Americans, I say we wise up. Don’t take advantage of the privileges you are bestowed. Act maturely, responsibly, and with consideration for your neighbor. Don’t give the government further reason to place restrictions on our daily lives.
